G-STAR RAW X ELLEN VON UNWERTH: THE SEQUEL
G-Star RAW and photographer Ellen von Unwerth have teamed up again for the denim brand’s Autumn/Winter 2015 campaign. This season sees the return of an intimate group of kindred spirits – bonded like brothers in uniforms of distinctive jeans and jackets.
von Unwerth’s raw, monochromatic style appears made to photograph denim, capturing the texture and attitude of the jeans at G-Star’s core. Booted and laced-up, the group embody the zeitgeist of youth, as magnetically united as they are fiercely independent. Playing with repetition in poses, the campaign’s military-like visual devices amplify the atmosphere of unity between the models and pay homage to product inspirations.
From clean selvedge denims, to the latest in washing treatments, G-Star’s broad taste in jeans is apparent. Highlighted is the G-Star Elwood jean, the first style constructed using the 3D Denim method and enduringly popular since its release in 1996. Born from the techniques of motorcycle pants, unlike traditional flat patternmaking, 3D Denim uses additional leg panels to form around the body.
The campaign combines familiar faces of the brand, with Camilla Christensen returning following her appearance in G-Star’s Spring/Summer ’15 campaign, alongside new additions; Eden Bristowe , Liam Gardner, Sang Woo Kim, Karmay Ngai, Michael Sharp, and Zanna van Vorstenbosch.
THE DENIM EVOLUTION WINTER 2015 COLLECTION
This winter, G-Star RAW continues to demonstrate their expertise in all things denim. From classic workwear-inspired pieces, to brand new favourites, the collection proves that there’s no such thing as too much denim.
Celebrating the brand’s most iconic silhouette, the 5620 Elwood Slim Fit jean captures the essence of ‘3D Denim’. First introduced in 1996, this design technique was a breakthrough in the denim industry – moulding the pant around the leg, rather than cutting it from a flat pattern. Accented with the original biker-inspired detailing, the new slim-fit version is made from tech-stretch and malt-coated denim, for an added touch of toughness.
Based on a classic 5-pocket style, the Lumber is a true piece of modern workwear. Crafted from premium Red Listing selvedge denim, this pair features a traditional cinch strap at the back to further control the fit. New for this season is also the US Lumber Dungaree. Cut in a loose fit from selvedge denim woven on antique American shuttle looms, this style ultimately reinforces the brand’s culture of innovation.
Referencing the original 3D Denim design, the 5620 Elwood Boyfriend jean is expertly cut from mid-weight denim in a slouchy yet slim fit. Unlike traditional patternmaking, which approaches the garment as a flat object, 3D Denim uses techniques to sculpt the jeans around the wearer’s body. Adding another twist to this season’s three-dimensional range, the Arc 3D Overall takes the classic dungarees to the next level.
Going from strength to strength, the women’s line-up sees the return of the new and improved boot-cut pant. Merging shape-enhancing techniques – from careful seam placements to the cleverly positioned back pocket – with clean detailing, this season’s flare is available in a variety of fits, such as the 3301 High Rise Skinny and the 3301 Low Rise jeans, making it easy to find the perfect pair.
THE NEW UTILITARIAN WINTER 2015 COLLECTION
Despite being renowned for their jeans, equally definitive to G-Star RAW is their interpretation to all things military.
Consistently influential since the brand’s inception, this season sees the inspiration take a range of forms. From distinct micro-camo prints on modernised cargo pants, to multiple pockets inspired by the aviation combat uniforms, every piece is constructed with military precision.
Referencing the style of jackets worn by the U.S. army on cold-weather expeditions, this season’s Submarine HDD Parka features removable lining, detachable hood and standalone outer. A durable three-in-one solution, just in time for the unpredictable transitional months of the year.
A returning favourite, renowned for their modernised fit, the men’s Rovic Cargo Pants are printed in a scaled down micro-camo that echoes a Polish moro pattern from the 1970’s. Utilitarian inspiration continues through the ladies line-up, including the straight-fit Rovic shirt, over dyed to a classic military tone.
The Winter 2015 Collection is available online and in stores as of November 2015.
