About mono.gramm:

Life has many facets, and we aim at designing clothes that can adapt to any occasion: easy to wear, easy to love in your everyday environment, but exuding a subtle elegance that can be accentuated for formal needs. We achieve this balance through seemingly effortless and comfortable designs with an individualistic twist. mono.gramm evolves from season to season with a specific atmosphere in mind, but without neglecting the essential starting points for each collection: unusual but simple pattern constructions, applying techniques of draping and the use of modest materials. We value simplicity and beauty, but we also cherish depth and intelligence in the design, production and communication of our clothes.

Drawing upon the excitement and challenges of living and working in different countries, from Germany, France and Finland to England and China, mono.gramm is currently being developed in Berlin by Gunhild Kranz, Kai von Rabenau and Vera Cheng. We collaborate closely with mono.kultur magazine and share a network of designers, technicians and artists to encourage the exchange of ideas. In this spirit, we first introduced mono.gramm in 2008 with a photography exhibition in London that featured large, atmospheric images of a beautifully lazy summer day by the lake.

Spring / Summer 2012

The Boyfriend Shirt

In a playful take on cross-dressing, the Spring / Summer 2012 collection by mono.gramm peeks into the wardrobe of your boyfriend. A single piece of garment – the boyfriend shirt – led to the development of a lighthearted and casual summer collection.

Undermining the official aura of the men’s shirt was our unofficial design agenda this season. So we took on our boyfriend’s classic striped office attire, twisted, shifted and mismatched the fabrics and exaggerated the proportions to give the masculine garment an unexpected playfulness. Bright colours and stripes in their many variations – from colour-blocking to horizontal, vertical and mismatching lines – all in silk cotton blends or cotton poplins give the classic menswear item a further feminine touch.

Because summer, after all, should be all about light, play and colour.
