The letters R and H come from the first letters of both designers` lastnames, Riiheläinen and Hernesniemi. R/H designers Hanna Riiheläinen and Emilia Hernesniemi met while studying in the University of Art & Design Helsinki. After working in different fields of fashion & design, Riiheläinen at Zac Posen in New York and Hernesniemi in Berlin at Agency V they decided to create their own design world through their own collection.
R/H`s unique world of colors, shapes and relaxed style developed into a collection rich on playful details combined with nordic minimalism, insightful feminine cuts, colorful prints and a certain spirit of black magic – still light and easy to wear. R/H plays with the contrasts of masculine and feminine through mixing soft materials with rough details. R/H`s garments are always made of fine materials such as silk, bamboo jersey and ecological reindeer leather, all combined with beautiful prints. The designers get inspired by atmospheres, music and the female anatomy. The R/H woman is a balanced individual with a creative mind.
The SS/11 collection was inspired by carnations and dahlias, meat eating plants, the nordic summer sky as well as Mickey Mouse, Dolly Parton and the famous Dada artist Picabia.
R/H AW 11/12 collection consists of dark elements made of soft quality materials such as wool, silk, bamboo and an R/H classic material, Finnish reindeer leather. Dragons and monsters, mountaintops and polar lights, proletarians and acrobats all bring something essential to the playfully visual world of this collection. The pictures of photographers Irving Penn and Michael Chelbin have both affected the collection with their uniquely melancholic atmospheres. Stieg Larsson`s Lisbeth Salander as well as the Finnish author Sofi Oksanen both had a compellingly strong influence as modern heroines and individualists.
Grown-up colors like black, grey and white are combined with strong, graphic prints. The Mickey ear cuts continue combined with new geometrical cuts in new forms, long and large. The R/H silhouette has a strong shape from shoulders to straight hem. All garments have more volume compared to earlier collections. The R/H silhouette has grown up and bold and sharp like a female knight.
