Porsche Design is a luxury brand with a particular focus on functional, timeless and purist design. All products of the brand are designed in the Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See, Austria, and are characterized by a pure and clean design aesthetic. An unmistakable signature look. The brand Porsche Design was founded by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1972. As the designer of the iconic sports car, the Porsche 911, he enjoyed a reputation as a functionalist. After leaving the Porsche car company as its head of design in 1972, he founded his own luxury brand: Porsche Design.

“If you analyse the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious.” was the belief of his design work. Design must be functional and functionality must be translated into visual aesthetics, without any reliance on gimmicks that have to be explained. The purism of “Porsche Design” demands authenticity and discards anything that is unnecessary or excessive. Initially, he designed the brand’s products in the Porsche Design Studio in Stuttgart, however, he relocated the studio to Zell am See in Austria only two years later.

The inaugural product of Porsche Design already created a sensation and became an icon: In 1972, the first-ever all black watch was introduced. A revolution within the watch industry. Until then timepieces were considered as jewelry and were –usually made out of silver or gold. However, for Porsche Design the focus was purely on function. For precisely this reason, the color black was chosen for the timepiece dial, creating the greatest possible with the white writing. The result: light reflections were avoided and the watch guaranteed excellent readability under all light conditions.

At the same time, a large number of industrial products such as household appliances and consumer goods for internationally well-known clients – even a tram for the city of Vienna – were designed by the “Design by F.A. Porsche" brand.

Today, the Porsche Design Studio is considered one of the most renowned design studios in Europe and has received more than 170 national and international awards for its unique and purist design philosophy.
