Sunday openings and special opening hours in Austria

Go to the mall after a long day of work? Drive to an outlet center on a busy Saturday? Often times, we lack the energy and passion for that. Kids are tired from school and you really only want to unwind on the couch. Sound familiar? All the better, that German cities schedule a specific number of Sundays on which shops are allowed to open additionally to their regular business hours.

In Austria, trade associations and labor unions fight over the liberalisation of the laws governing the hours of trading - customers are all in favor for it. But, in general, Austrian shops are not allowed to open on Sundays. Nevertheless, there are several exceptions to this rule, like the so-called "tourism zones" as in the old town of Salzburg. Depending on the time of the year, there are also other touristic regions in which products like fitting sportswear can be sold (e.g. skiing trousers in skiing regions during peak season).
