GAUCHÈRE is a high-end young designer brand based in Paris. Important to the exclusively in France produced brand is uniqueness, authenticity and quality for the construction of a garment therefor GAUCHÈRE is working with a handful of selected French manufacturers with different expertise.
GAUCHÈRE is ambivalent, but it is all about a natural duality. It is the ability to make all contrasting elements merge with each other that create the authentic and strong design of the brand and the collection. GAUCHÈRE has always two sides, the apparent and the hidden.
GAUCHÈRE plays with contrasts by using unique techniques and high quality fabrics as surface of a new three-dimensional garment. Oversized and large shapes meet fitted pieces, and classic menswear tailoring appears in a next context by the simultaneous use of masculine and feminine aspects of a garment. The collections are not about symmetry, harmony or sameness, they are about a complex architecture of different shapes and forms that creates a totality of displaced dimensions.
THE DESIGNER
Marie-Christine Statz, born 1982 in Germany, is the designer and founder of the French prêt-à-porter house GAUCHÈRE.
After her studies in Economics Marie-Christine received her education in Fashion Design at New York’s Parsons School of Design, following roles as Assistant Designer at Narciso Rodriguez in 2008 and Diane von Furstenberg in 2009, both in New York. After leaving Diane von Furstenberg, Marie-Christine decided to move to Paris and received a special qualification in Haute Couture at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, closing her education with a collaboration with the Musée de la Dentelle in Caudry, France, where her creations were part of the exhibition ‘Rêves de dentelle pour robes de rêve’.
With her own vision in mind Marie-Christine presented her first collection GAUCHÈRE Spring/ Summer 2013 along with the official launch of the brand during Paris fashion week in October 2012. In 2014 she was among the finalists of the ANDAM award.
Her collections are being sold by selective wholesalers in France, Italy, the United States, Canada, Japan, China, and Korea, such as Le Bon Marché, Opening Ceremony, The Webster, Corso Como, Space Mue and Takashimaya among others. Women´s Wear Daily recently appointed GAUCHÈRE as „the label to watch“.
In her design contrary elements need to come together to finally exist in coherence to each other. The collection reflects her personal view on design and her own aesthetic vision. It speaks a graphic language and focuses on different dimensions in the structure of the garment, which can be seen as antagonisms in the architecture of a garment. These antagonisms lead to the creation of different sizes and shapes, adjacent to each other in one garment, or as different volumes and shapes, sometimes straight graphic lines and round organic volumes, merged into each other. Her vision is perfect when contrasts are in perfect harmony.
