The inspiration to the name MADAM STOLTZ comes from India – as so much else in the life of Pernille Stoltz.
”The Indians are very polite and always addresses me with ’Madam’. In 1995, when I should name my first shop, Madam Stoltz was the first name on my mind, and I have sticked to the name ever since”.
There has never been a big masterplan behind Madam Stoltz. Instead, the driving forces have been creativity, fantasy and an adventurous mind. Combined with a deep fascination of the Asian style of living and the ability to seize the opportunities popping up when on the move.
It all began in the early 1990´s with a young Danish woman, Pernille Stoltz. In order to finance her Asian journey, Pernille bought jewelleries at flea markets in India and sold the same to tourists on the beaches in Greece.
After 3 years of travelling and a lot of adventures she returned to Denmark – with her head full of ideas of how to produce her own designs of handicrafts with some of the skillful Indian craftsmen she had met on her journey.
In 1995, Pernille opened a small shop selling hooks, baskets, candlestands, jewelleries and Indian saris in the latin quarter of Copenhagen. The shop gave Pernille the opportunity to travel to India frequently and to make her creative ideas become real. In 1997, Pernille started selling to other lifestyle- and giftshops in Denmark – and the wholesale business of Madam Stoltz was born.
In 2002, Pernille and her husbond Peter, decided to move to Pernille´s native island, Bornholm – in the middle of the Baltic Sea, together with their 2 young daughters. The couple is now running Madam Stoltz in a partnership. Pernille is the designer and responsible for the contact to the suppliers in India and China. Peter is looking after the logistics and the finances.
”I travel to India minimum 4 times yearly – and I always return full of inspiration – India has become my second home”.
Madam Stoltz has 14 employees on Bornholm and the products are sold in shops all over Europe.
In Nexø, at the eastcoast of Bornholm, you will find the headoffice of Madam Stoltz. A former furniture factory has been completely renovated and is now the base for Pernille, Peter and the 14 employees – and the little dog Carlo, doing his best to keep the stress level down.
The bright and spacious offices are naturally furnished with designs from the Madam Stoltz collections – from furnitures to lamps and candlestands.
Besides the offices, warehouse and showroom, a 250 m2 outlet-shop has recently been opened on the premises in Nexø – very popular among the local residents as well as the many tourists visiting Bornholm.
In a former grocer´s shop, in the small fishing village Listed, you will find the Madam Stoltz shop – with all the new products from the Madam Stoltz collection on display. The shop is open from April to October – the peakseason is July and August where Bornholm is invaded by tourists.
”I work in the shop as much as possible. It is very important for me to have a direct contact with the customers and have their feedback. It gives me a good understanding of their likes and valuable inputs for future designs”.
